Stepping Stones and Stumbling Blocks

Last week I had a very special experience. If I ever had any doubt in the law of attraction made famous by the Secret, it was gone after last week. A friend and I went to visit a mutual friend of ours that had recently got married and had moved into a near by apartment complex. Shortly after we arrived we agreed that such a beautiful day shouldn’t be wasted and decided to go down to the complex pool. As I walked in I saw a man relaxing in the pool. As I got closer I realized that this man although normal in every other way, had no arms and no legs. I hate to admit it but I stared a little, not because I saw him as a spectacle but more because I couldn’t believe that I saw him correctly. I also noticed the man seemed content. There was no bitterness, pain, or any look of being worn out by what life had dealt him in his face. In fact he had a subtle smile as he lay in the sun. As I began to apply the necessary sun block, I thought to my self. “I wonder if this is because of an accident, or if he was born this way?” The next thought I had was, “If this guy knew what he was capable of doing and who he was capable of touching with his story, he could do the world an impact full service.”

For the next 15 minutes my friends and I were talking about business things and how much money we had lost or gained in the stock market. Then this man piped up and started talking about Stock trading, before long him and I just got into a detailed conversation about his circumstances. Come to find out this young man was Nick Vujicic. Nick is a native Australian who for no rhyme or reason was born limbless. Now 25 years old has become a motivational speaker and has spoken all around the world to more than 2 million people. He has spoken at the Crystal Cathedral, been on 20/20 and is scheduled to be on Oprah later this year. He told me about his struggles, heart break and many of his triumphs. We spoke about our mutual passion for motivational speaking and our goals to make the world a better place. When I finally left I grabbed his phone number and email, and he said “Give me a hug, I don’t like hand shakes” as you could imagine I was happy to do so and knelt down and gave him a hug. When I got home I looked him up on youtube.com and watched countless videos in various languages. I watched a video in Spanish where he demonstrates himself swimming, putting on a shirt, making and eating an omelet brushing his teeth, walking his dog, answering and talking on his cell phone and typing on his computer more than 40 words a minute. All with out limbs and with out any assistance from any one. It will come to no surprise to you that the book Nick is writing is titled, “No limbs, No Limits”. I can not tell you how grateful I am that Nick and I both visiting from somewhere else per chance met at a random apartment complex pool to discuss our shared craft of speaking and philosophize on the great potential of a human being.

It is humbling to here this man speak of his gratitude for the type of life God had granted him. To be grateful for a life with no arms or legs and to share his thoughts of abundant living with the world is very telling of the type of man he is. It makes me wonder, what is the rest of our excuse? It is hard to her someone’s sob story of why they didn’t have any opportunity to make it in this life when you know there are people like Nick thriving. Talking to him made me realize how wealthy all of us really are. How much we have been given free of charge from our Beautiful God is very apparent if we only choose to look for it. We have all often heard complaints of people being with out money and inconsequence live unfortunate lives. Lives they feel that all problems would be solved with money. To that cadence I would ask, how much then would you sell your arms and legs for? Would a million, billion or trillion make you even think twice? Is there any amount of money that you would take for them? If not then, you must admit you have been given plenty compared to Nick Vujicic. However with what he has been given, look what he has done with it.

The difference between a Stumbling Block and Stepping Stone is the Character of the individual walking the path. To me this is a lesson learned that any of us no matter what lot we have been given in life, can, like the Phoenix rise from out of the ash and accomplish absolutely anything that we choose to. All that is required is that we acknowledge what we have and the source of where it comes. Once we have done that our own limbs become unbound and we become free to do and have anything. True is the title of Nick’s book, but the “No limits” part applies to all of us. It’s obvious that what is important to Nick’s success in life has nothing to do with arms and legs but has everything to do with the mastery of Nick’s mind. And so it is with all of us. Since we can not put a price tag on our arms and legs, let’s take it a step further. What kind of price tag do you think Nick puts on his positive attitude, his vision for a better world, his belief in himself? I did not ask him those questions but I already know his answer and in my opinion he values those things a lot more than most of us value our arms and legs.

So next time you think of yourself in a bad spot with less than just circumstances or feeling like you are in a no light at the end of the tunnel situation. Remember that there is always someone else out there that has done more, with less, then think of Nick.

I do not believe in coincidences. I believe that I met him so that he could improve my life and hopefully in a small way by sharing his story, I could improve yours. I look forward to the day that I will undoubtedly share the stage with Nick Vujicic and we can share the story of our chance encounter and what a great day that will be. For more information about Nick Vujicic, go to his website. http://www.lifewithoutlimbs.org/ and look him up on http://www.youtube.com/ Also feel free to visit http://www.travisalexander.net/

  5. My heart goes out to the family of Travis Alexander! I am so touched by his writing, his wit, his public speaking, his intelligence, and his zest for life. So sorry to this family and their sorrow. Remember each and everyone of you now have an angel on your shoulders.

  6. Clearly for all his "insight", he didn't have enough of it when it came to his sex life. I find this very tragic and sad. Integrity is treating everyone as an equal, not like a thing to be played with when you feel like it. I of course know that Jodi Arias is and was deeply disturbed to murder him as she did...but was he THAT out of touch with reality to not know that he should have stopped screwing her as soon as they "first" broke up? Let this be an object lesson to anyone who thinks that "3 hole wonders" are worth hanging onto. Clearly, they are not! Such a shame.

    1. You have some nerve going on his blog to put your dumb opinion up. Jodi has a website that would be happy to put your ignorant comment up. Not only was she disturbed she lured him to the most vulnerable place (naked taking a shower) and attacked him with a knife. What she did was unspeakable violence that will never be tolerated. If anyone can see her side of things they are the disturbed one (you)!

    2. Has any one wondered if JA is making these absurd comments on his blogs from jail?
Noone deserves to be murdered regardless of circumstance. Travis, May you RIP.
Condolences to your family and may they find closure regardless of Sentence! JA will have to answer to God!

Did he have sex ...was he infatuated lost in the allure for awhile?Yes ...but like in every relationship there must be more.Travis had realized it . Knew he was wrong . Had taken steps to atone and change his ways? I believe He did. I believe he was seeking counsel from His Bishop. Have you ever been really angry with someone? Called them dispicable names and regretted it once things calmed down? He was human a wonderful caring loving Man that got ensnared by someone much more experienced and so much more manipulative. Please show some simple human kindness and delete your post. Its most unkind and unfair. He is not alive to defend himself . Your friend jodi saw to that.

    1. I totally agree. He is no longer with us due to Jodi's hands. This is just a blog. I went here just to read his blog. To see him. To connect. I can't believe all the negativity Please remember he is no longer with us His family has not taken down his writings. Realize that everyone who has negativity in their hearts and souls go elsewhere to be heard. This is not the place. I am deeply touched by his writings. May you all remember he was a human being that was taken murdered. I do believe every human being goes through a "wild" time and comes a time to grow up. Look inside yourself. I'm sure that you went through the same. He was a Morman. He was just starting to do what his religion dictates. I see nothing wrong. Usually all people turn to their religion sometime in their life and start following their own path. It makes a person stronger to go through life. Unfortunately we will never know what he could have become. What I see from his short life, he was on the right path and touched many souls. Even now in death he is still touching people. Jody may have wanted or needed the publicity but its Travis that is touching lives and hearts. Sleep with the angels Travis.

  9. Seriously....you Jodi Arias lovers need to go and post on her blog....and buy her "art" that she has been "drawing" while she has been in Court awaiting her outcome. Get the Hell off of Travis' blog....and show some respect. Wait. You support a cold-blooded murderess. You know nothing about respect. I sincerely hope that nothing like what happened to Travis or his family happens to you...otherwise you would never sully Travis or his family by the things that you have said on HIS blog. Go troll on Jodi Arias's blog or whatever she has. Leave Travis, his family and friends alone!!!!!!

  10. "Never judge another unless you've walked a day in their shoes"....Travis' life is the ultimate "from rags to riches", success story In my eyes. Considering his childhood was plagued by neglectful, dysfunctional parents battling addictions which ultimately took both of their lives. These feelings of abandonment, rejection and loss never go away you simply find ways to cope and survive. Travis is one of the few from humble beginnings who conquered when it came to monetary gains but in my opinion when really analyzing not only the details of this case but also his actual words such as in this blog, his early childhood "trauma" persay really affected his relationships and emotional well-being and rightly so. He was passionately seeking an emotionally stable wife who would grant him that "family unit" that he never had and so desperately longed for. However he was attracting those like him (as he stated) who were attempting to "fill" those voids that were missing since hls childhood that only loving parents could fill. This search can last a lifetime. We all have weak moments in our lives where we are especially vulnerable to sin and the "excitement" it can add momentarily. JA capitalized on this and used it for all she could. Travis eventually "woke up" and came to his senses not only about who Jodi really was and how dangerous she could be but also to the fact that these sexual acts/experiences were not who he was and who he wanted to be. It's called mistakes people and why we rely on Gods grace because we ALL need it. Travis was not only a good man but a great man and his speeches, writings, kind acts and all the incredible things his family and friends have to say about him are all a testament to that. I have pity for JA in that she is a lost soul and full of evil. Having said that I wish no mercy on her....commit the crime, you must do the time.

    1. I want to preface by saying I do not like Jodi Arias. She is just as narcissistic as Travis was. He was not some great original thinker, but instead he regurgitated some of the bs he read. Big deal. Literally anyone can do that, and likely with better grammatical skill and insight. That being said, he did not deserve to die over faults many others possess.

Maybe borrow a book {perhaps a dictionary or a thesaurus} There is an old saying "Better to stay quiet and be thought a fool than to open mouth {Or in this case use the keyboard} and confirm it". You condemn Him for being born to addicts as if that somehow makes him less of a person. It doesn't. In fact it makes it even clearer how far he came in life. Instead of bashing a dead man perhaps you could go do something for someone and feel better about yourself that way. You cant build happiness on the unhappiness of others.

  21. What is wrong with people? Why do people believe that crazy evil person who thought she had the right to end Travis's life was abused. It's none of our business what their sex life was like. That was between Travis and his believs he owed nothing to me or the rest of the world for his sexual activites he did behind closed doors. He had sex with a more than a willing person why does that make him a sexuail deviant? Not too many women allow men to have anal sex with them and Travis wasn't her first anal experience or even 2nd or 3rd or 4th. This girl was the sexual deviant trying to get a man the only way she knew how. Sex, because she had nothing else to offer someone. To say negative things about a man who was murdered because he didn't love the murderer back is wrong. From the sex phone call between them that she recoreded without him knowning (that's normal?) she was well aware of their future (no future) and acted okay with it, so if he was tricked to believe she was okay with their friends with benefits thing, then his only mistake was messing with easy breezy skanky Jodie

I believe nothing that creeps out of the mouth of his killer, Jodi Ann Arias. I will rejoice when they put her to death.

  29. Wow after all this research of these two people I have only concluded that Travis Alexander was a Beautiful living soul. My son is only 17 months old but I keep seeing Travis and his words and face and I get reminded of how beautiful my son is and I have a feeling my son will look and be just like this guy when my son grows up. I guess I just see him as an Angel.
Jealousy is a deadly sin one of seven and it cant be fathomed in love. This was a lust thing. No trust no dignity but in all due respect I think she was the person who tempted him into the sex sins. I've listened and read all the details and Her looks are not a reflection of the evil that she contains. She needs the gas chamber or the electric chair. Lethal Injection is just too easy. Travis was such a beautiful man inside and out. What a shame that first witness didn't feel a spark for him. I think he would have been a good candidate as most eligible bachelor.
I think if she hadnt gone psycho he might have eventually chosen her but her sexuality made him more ashamed of being around her then anything. maybe if she trully had felt the spirit he felt she would have been the one for him. She is a fruitcake and she needs to be tossed in a gas chamber.

Although I do not know you, I have been watching this trial, videos, as well as reading your blog, and posts on Facebook. Your friend could not of said it better ... "you were a rising star"! My heart aches for your family as I watch their pain through this trial. God Bless You All !! You have left a legacy of inspiration to all that loved and knew you, as well as the ones who are just getting to know who you truly were. You have overcame the toughest of times as a child, and a young man and yet were not bitter. You endeavored to be more and better in life. I applaud you for that alone ... May you continue to shine in Heaven, as bright as You did here on Earth ! My prayers and thoughts are with your Family ... Hang in there,
    Justice is coming !

His writing shows how aware of that fact he was, and how hard he worked his whole life to keep getting better. Before I got here, I wanted to see his accused killer punished so badly because (well first because she planned it and did it...) she's just a pathetic empty loser who thinks she's so smart that she can get away with murder. 36. Dear Travis,

Well, the jury just announced that they have reached a verdict in your murder case. I have followed this tragic saga since the trial started in January and my heart, like so many others, has been broken because of your murder. Many people have come to know about you -- to realize the loss in our world because you are gone. I know in my heart the jury has done the right thing and that woman who murdered you will pay the price for her actions. I would like for your family to know that in death as in life, you have touched an entire world. Your passion for life and deep consideration of others has touched the lives of a nation and I would like for you to know that even though I never knew you, I feel as though your presence in this world has made a difference in my life. I promise to never forget you and every year on your birthday I will say a prayer for your family and remember the things I have done to help others -- in your name. I am so sorry that you do not get to experience everything in life that you should and know that forever you will be remembered for being better. . .

My heart breaks for you Travis and your family as well. My God continue to give your family the strength has has.

  45. Nobody is perfect. Nobody is without fault and nobody deserves to die a violent, sudden and barbaric death. It happens in war but when it's done at the hands of someone who professes to love you it is beyond barbarism.

Arias is murderously psychotic. A definition of evil dressed in innocence. I oppose the death penalty and believe that a life of imprisonment may give her time to reflect and to change. That's her choice.

To the people here posting sick comments on the sexual behaviour of Travis Alexander all I can say you are more to be pitied than ridiculed.

Look more closely in the mirror.

  48. The world suffered a great loss the day your voice was prematurely silenced....but your powerful words of deep wisdom will live on in these inspiring words of upliftment and courage!

It saddens me that people continue to post ignorant, hateful, judgemental comments in spite of actual facts.

It just comes to show what an evil, wicked, unloving world we live in today. Where the prophetic words, "men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, lovers of pleasures and not lovers of God..."

Regardless of our "imperfect system" and brainwashed minds, the truth always prevails with a higher power....

Travis was murdered, nothing Jodi can say or deny could ever erase her cruelty. All the lies that spews from her mouth will be her own undoing.

To judge the victim who cannot defend himself is animalistic and unreasonable....to believe a narcissistic psychopath is insane....especially when its her actions that are skillfully hidden by her need for many words to cover up her "monstrous behavior"....

Jodi Arias is a lost soul who is an empty shell of self-centered love and deranged reasoning. She has no conscience, no empathy and no heart.

She is an abomination to the human race and an atrocity to society. The only thing going for her is her looks which will fade and expose the true monster she is. She is a controlling, abusive bitch, and all her actions during the trial is proof of that.

People need to slow down and take a closer look at the beast within her. She accuses Travis by "projecting" her own thoughts and actions unto him! If Jodi calls Travis a "sexual deviant", then she is obviously the sexual deviant.
If she says that he abused her, then SHE is obviously the abuser!

I'm dumbfounded by people's lack of "common sense"....How can anyone believe that Travis was abusive towards a sly, conniving, manipulative little demon? Especially one who persistently lied to the authorities after murdering her "so called abuser"???

Abused people do not stalk, lie and manipulate their "abuser"....nor do they drive a thousand miles with the intent to sexually manipulate and then murder them!

Jodi obviously stalked Travis by the fact that she was in HIS house and commited the murder in HIS bedroom!

May you Rest In Love Travis Alexander....you were a bright star, destined for greatness! Your only flaw was being human and falling for a demonic psychopath....

May Jodi learn to live with her empty souless heart, and never know what it is to feel love for another person....may she be tortured by her own emptiness....

The World stopped and took notice of the heinous crime you've commited in taking a life that was so precious and positive to mankind....

  49. I am so so sorry so very sorry society failed this man. I find fault in the court system the judge time management the defense team arguments and Jodies entirety But will not elaborate here (read just da truth) But have defended Alexanders by exposing Jodie there. I am ashamed My Justice system failed although Jury found Aggregation and Murder One they quit or Judge quit for them a real Travesty. Please don't weavers my request and decision yours. I'm also sorry social media hurts yourselfs. And find Travis's private life (sex) understandable The bulk yelling discuss are hypocritical. 25years minus five Jury option was Jodie at 52 or D P is restrictive. Table 50years in Prison towards Jury and decisions easy. Life in Prison although Death Penalty our preference. I believe Jodie's a serial killer individual, and the world needs this D P retrial. Again I Am So Sorry our system failed.

  50. On this day I can't help but think of the impact and forever changed world that you left in your wake, in life and death. The circumstances for your departure from this world will never be understood...ever. You were a glorious person of insight and still are. Your light shines so bright even after 5 years of your passing. Many are better because of your ideas and words and the most evil of creatures cannot stop the true greatness that stands in your name forever. You've done it ! You've changed the world and continue to keep doing it.

  52. Travis, I know you are gone but you are not forgotten and your legacy lives on. You may never have shared the stage with Nick, but your blog made it's way to me - one of the people you hoped to reach and change with your words. Thank you for this because it brought me out of the pity party I've been perpetually throwing, ever since becoming permanently injured in a car accident. Your words - and Nick's story - made me realize how blessed I truly am. It taught me that my injuries are barely a scratch compared to others who have done so much more with so much less to work with. There are no excuses anymore. Because of you, my life just took a major step in the right direction (no pun intended). Thank you Travis. You made a difference like you wanted to. I hope that gives you peace, now, wherever you are.
    Love
    Jenna

  53. Travis was a douche bag womanizer and hypocrite. How this is not seen by all the supporters of Travis is beyond me? No, his actions were not deserving of death, but his death does not make his pathetic life deserving of some pedestal.

  57. Even though we never met Travis , I figured out where that woman would have dumped the evidence she used to kill you and turned the location over to the police. The evidence I collected from the site gave them full confidence I had indeed found the correct area and they went there to recover the rest of the items. Now we are just days away from this evidence being admitted into the courtroom. I hope the time and money it took for this to have happened will be worth it as it is the best I could do for you and your family. signed your unknown friend

  58. This chode ripped his "motivational speaking" off from others. This whole stumbling blocks thing is an old quote and it has even been a "motivational poster":

  59. Travis was a very strong amazing man. In his life as a motivational speaker, I am sure he had a positive impact on the lives of so many people. He came from a nightmare childhood yet was able to overcome it helping those around him. I am sorry his life had to be cut so short by a mentally deranged unstable piece of work. Young people need to understand you cant force someone to love you, you cant force someone to trust you, you cant force someone to be your friend. Jodi didnt understand those things. She was unhappy, insecure and had no respect for herself or for others. She was looking for someone to fill the void in herself and here was a man who was all the things she was not. If he didnt love her, she could have backed away gotten counseling and gotten someone else instead. But instead, she took away a good man from his brothers and sisters. She took away a man who worked so hard to overcome all the negativity in his life only to have his life cut short. But during the time he was here he was sent here for a purpose. Although he didnt live long Travis was able to make a positive contribution by empowering others to fulfill their true potential.

  61. I have just actually looked into this case for the first time. My stomach is in knots, my heart is sad and my soul feels burdened. I'm sorry for everyone's loss. I understand Travis was human, and no amount of wrong choices should cause your life to be over. It is 10:05 p.m. on January 27th 2019 and I hurt. I am saddened by this entire story. I pray healing has begun on some level and continues. Bless you, all.

  62. I couldnt even bring myself to copy and paste his own vile and disgusting words that he used to defile women, and children. This shows a full spectrum of how convincing evil can be, and portray itself as good. He was a monster who met a meaner monster. My condolences to his family for learning the truths about him as well as his loss of life simultaneously. Play with fire and be burned. Had he truly led a moral life this would not have been his fate.
